UC Davis Information & Educational Technology

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac

Office 2008 for Mac is the latest version of Microsoft's productivity suite for Mac OS X, including such commonly-used applications as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

In collaboration with technical representatives from various campus departments, Information and Educational Technology (IET) has developed recommendations and support plans for Microsoft’s latest operating system, Vista, and continues to examine Vista’s compatibility with other applications commonly used on campus.
Starting July 1, 2007, IET officially began supporting Vista and makes the following recommendations:

Students
Students purchasing new PCs should purchase a system with the Vista Home Premium edition or better. Please check with your school or college to find out if it has specific recommendations.

Faculty and staff
When purchasing a computer for personal or university use, UC Davis faculty and staff are encouraged to check with their departmental technology support staff  to determine whether to buy a system with Vista, and which version to select (see the Technology Support Coordinators directory).

Upgrades
Before upgrading an older system to Vista, you should take into consideration the system’s hardware configurations and any installed software, which may or may not be compatible with Vista. To view the campus hardware recommendations, please visit the Computer Ownership Web site.

Please note that Windows XP remains supported by Microsoft and IET, and an immediate migration to Vista is not required to remain compliant with the UC Davis cyber-safety standards.

If you have questions, please contact the IT Express Help Desk at (530) 754-HELP (754-4357) or ithelp@ucdavis.edu.

Thank you to the individuals and groups who generously volunteered their time and expertise to test the various applications against Office 2008 for Mac. (view the list of volunteers)

Compatibility
Information and Educational Technology (IET) has coordinated a campus-wide compatibility testing effort for Leopard, Office 2008 for Mac, and Safari 3 (see the campus Macintosh Web site for more information). The compatibility information has been collected as part of a collaborative effort on the part of many individuals and groups from various campus departments.
