Microsoft Vista Compatibility Test Plan

IET developed a set of general test plans to facilitate testing a wide variety of applications against Microsoft Vista, Office 2007, and Internet Explorer, and provided them to all testing volunteers. These test plans were intended to be used as a basic framework. We asked testing volunteers to expand them as necessary to include criteria specific to the application they were testing in order to provide the most useful and comprehensive information to the campus. Additionally, we asked the volunteers to test their applications against the relevant versions of Vista, Office 2007, and Internet Explorer. If a specific application did not require testing against a particular Microsoft program, or if it was not applicable, we asked testers to include this information.

Application Information
For each application tested, we asked testing volunteers to provide basic information about the application, including:

  • name of application
  • version number(s)
  • whether or not the vendor currently supports Vista, Office 2007, and/or IE8
  • URL of the vendor support page (if applicable)
  • whether or not the application is functional with Vista, Office 2007, and/or IE8
  • brief comments about the functionality of the application
  • recommended versions for use with Vista, Office 2007, and/or IE8
  • brief comments about the recommended versions

General Test Plan for Vista (all versions)
For each specific criterion, testers were asked to specify the expected results; the actual results; and whether or not the application passed or failed. General test criteria included:

  • Installation and uninstall
  • Launch application - shortcut, file and other applications (if applicable)
  • Initial setup wizard (if applicable)
  • Create and save a new file of type associated with application
  • Try to open this file in older versions
  • Open existing file of type associated with this application
  • Import file from another application (if applicable)
  • Export file to another application (if applicable)
  • Display/User Interface - How does the software look and perform
