The SWAN project will establish a network hub site for Calren2, 4Cnet, DCP, UC Davis, and the UC Davis Medical Center. The lease for the hub location, at 1107 9th street in Sacramento, has been negotiated and will be signed by CENIC the last week in May. This downtown location is designed to hold 16 network racks and will have ample space for future network initiatives such as the Digital California Project.
Initial negotiations with the City of Sacramento for the location of the fiber conduit have shifted focus; fiber along L street was thought to be "abandoned," but, in fact, is being used. A stretch of dark fiber along 9th is planned to serve as part of the link between 9th street and the L street telecommunications building (where Qwest Communications is located). The current plan being considered is trenching for a new fiber plant in an alleyway that runs parallel to L street, which will connect with the 9th street fiber and end at the L street building. The SWAN project is targeted to start the construction phase in June 2001.
