Content Delivery

Course Management with SmartSite

SmartSite is the new UC Davis collaboration and course management system powered by Sakai, an open-source software application. SmartSite can be used for various tasks and projects. For more information about SmartSite, contact Academic Technology Services at (530) 752-2133 or by email: ats@ucdavis.edu.

Distance Learning

Distance learning allows courses taught on campus to be delivered locally, nationally, or internationally to larger, more diverse audiences. These simultaneous broadcasts link classrooms without regard to location and may be interactive or tape-delayed for a later rebroadcast. For reservation information please contact 752-9260 or the ATS Help Desk at (530) 752-2133.

UC Davis uses podcasting as the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio or video recordings, over the Internet using the RSS protocol. Many courses and special events are podcast by IET. For more information, contact ATS at (530) 752-2133 or by email: ats@ucdavis.edu.

Webcasting (live & on-demand)

Webcasting refers to either live or on-demand transmission of video content over the Internet. Academic Technology Services uses real-time encoders and streaming media technology to take a single content source and distribute it to many simultaneous listeners/viewers. Popular formats include Real, QuickTime and Windows Media. For more information, contact Academic Technology Services at (530) 752-2133 or by email: podcast@ucdavis.edu.
