Educause names new president

Educause, a nonprofit that seeks to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology, has appointed IT expert Diana G. Oblinger as its president and chief executive officer starting Jan. 1, 2008. She has been the group's vice president.

She will succeed Brian L. Hawkins, who has led Educause since it was formed in 1998. Oblinger's background includes stints as a campus administrator, faculty member, and a senior-level employee of IBM and Microsoft.

Educause, among other services, offers professional development opportunities and free materials to people at UC Davis and other universities and colleges. The resources include publications, Web seminars, presentations, effective practices, discussion groups, conference materials, and a searchable library, on subjects ranging from cybersecurity and networking to the law and teaching.

Pete Siegel, UC Davis chief information officer and vice provost for Information and Educational Technology, is a member of the Educause-Internet2 Security Task Force Executive Committee.
