Both chambers of Congress have passed a long-awaited bill that creates a federal regime for the regulation of spam email. The bill, known as the ?Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003? (or ?CAN-SPAM Act?), preempts many provisions of existing state anti-spam laws, including the highly restrictive California law that was set to take effect in January 2004.

On December 1, John Bruno, Vice Provost for Information and Educational Technology (IET), shared with deans, vice provosts and vice chancellors a draft of the campus' Information Technology Strategic Plan, along with a list of proposed IT projects for 2003-05. Starting as early as January 15, 2004, about 40,000 student applicants to UC Davis will be allowed to create a UCD LoginID and Kerberos password, which will enable them to authenticate to UC Davis and use their Web browser as part of the new online application process.

As you may have heard in the media, "Number Portability" has become an option for wireless telephone users. Number Portability allows consumers to switch between wireless telephone service providers while at the same time retaining, or "porting," their existing telephone number. This FCC mandate went into effect November 24, 2003.

To alleviate confusion with respect to this new service offering, the campus has issued a directive that points out a number of items that should be kept in mind with respect to porting to a different provider.

Information and Educational Technology (IET) is planning to upgrade the central campus email servers during winter break, on December 29, at 10:00 a.m. This software upgrade is necessary to prepare for future technical improvements to the servers such as securing email passwords.

If you access your mail via the campus email servers, you may need to take some steps prior to December 29 in preparation for the upgrade, as outlined in the link below.

Anti-spam organizations are the target of a new Internet worm outbreak that tries to knock them offline with a crippling data barrage, computer security experts said Tuesday.

Virus experts believe the worm, W32/Mimail-L, is the work of a vengeful spam email peddler bent on paralyzing organizations that try to deal with spam.
