Should Auld Print Charges Be Forgot?

Many of you may remember that way back in June 2001, Computer Lab Management, the people who run the computer rooms, started charging for printing over 200 sheets a quarter in the campus labs. Perhaps you?d forgotten all about print charging amidst all the hubbub of finals, escape-from-Davis planning, and holiday activities, but the folks at Computer Lab Management haven't. If you printed more than 200 sheets in labs last quarter, guess what? ?Tis the season for print billing.

NBA Comes to UC Davis

The NBA (New Business Architecture, not National Basketball Association!) is a UC-wide initiative that will help manage unprecedented enrollment growth in the next decade. It's also expected to help all UC campuses control costs, implement best business practices, and improve our work environment. One of the ways in which these goals will be met here on campus is through the development of an enterprise portal (think of it as an expanded, beefed up MyUCDavis) that will support the campus' business and academic needs. To read more about the NBA, go to the new Web site at http://nba.ucdavis.edu/ (or http://newbusinessarchitecture.ucdavis.edu/). To stay informed, you may also want to add the New Business Architecture channel to your MyUCDavis portal. To do so, click on "Customize this Page" on the main page and select "New Business Architecture" at the bottom of the list on the right side of the page. With the channel, you'll have easy and convenient access to NBA news, meeting minutes, FAQs, projects, accomplishments, etc.

Users will also notice cosmetic changes, such as better use of color on the screen. The changes most affecting users are modifications to user login procedures and UC Davis forms, as well as a Citrix environment upgrade.

New UC Software Reseller

The UC system has selected a new reseller to handle orders under UC's volume software agreements. These contracts cover products for departmental use. The new reseller is Technology Resource Center (TRC), located in West Dundee, Illinois, outside Chicago. TRC will replace Software Spectrum as the UC reseller effective 10/1/01. Several months ago, after being notified that Software Spectrum planned to move away from the academic market, the University initiated a bid process to select a new reseller. Responses were received from six resellers. They were evaluated using many criteria including the ability to handle a large number of University accounts, proposed services, and pricing. TRC scored well in all areas. The vendors whose contracts will be handled by TRC are Microsoft (Select program), Adobe, FileMaker, IBM/Lotus and Symantec. Additional vendors may be added in the future. Purchasing procedures for Microsoft Select products are different from before. For Microsoft Select products, TRC has a special arrangements with CompuCom. All Microsoft Select products will be passed on to CompuCom and fulfilled by Microsoft. TRC's product and pricing information are available at http://www.gotrc.com/casystemsstore.htm. For more information, see "New Software Reseller for UC Chosen" in the October IT Times.

Campus Adopts Interim Web Privacy Statement

Information and Educational Technology, Public Communications and Campus Counsel have developed a draft data privacy and security statement for campus Internet Web sites. Under campus directive 01-088, campus units hosting Internet credit card transactions are required to post the interim privacy and security statement on their e-commerce Web sites, review their Internet service offerings for compliance with the statement, and, as determined by each unit, implement any remedial action. This approach permits the campus to continue with plans to develop a formal Internet Web publication policy that addresses consumer privacy and security issues while also demonstrating a "good faith" effort to meet existing credit card program requirements.
