UC Davis Mobile App Privacy Notice

The University of California, Davis (“UC Davis”, “We”, “Us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This notice explains how UC Davis Mobile (“App”) collects, uses, and protects information on both iOS and Android devices. 

The App is intended to provide UC Davis students with the following services (“Services”): Realtime Unitrans bus tracking; Unitrans bus schedule viewing and saving; and a directory of UC Davis campus services.


Scope

This Privacy Notice is applicable to users of Our App on their personal mobile device. This App is not intended for children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Children under 13 should not download or use Our App or Services. If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child has provided Personal Information without your consent, please contact us to request the information’s removal.


Information We Collect

There are several ways the App may collect information about you: 

Information you provide directly

  • Personal Information: This information may include your name, email address, affiliation with UC Davis, student status at UC Davis, and settings you may change within the App.

  • Communications or Customer Support: Any communications you send to us and the information those communications contain (which could be email address, name, and message contents).

Information collected automatically:

  • Location Services Data: Some mobile devices allow you to restrict or deny the App’s ability to collect this information. Please review your device’s settings to learn more and adjust your preferred settings. If you approve UC Davis Mobile to access your location, the App may use your mobile device’s precise location data to provide its Services. Depending on your configurations, the App may periodically tell Us your device’s precise location even if you are not directly interacting with the App.

  • Device Information: We also collect basic information about the device you are accessing the App from, such as device type, operating system version, App version, usage and interaction data, crash reports, diagnostic information, and unique device or installation identifiers.

Certain data related to a User’s preferences is stored locally on your device. This data includes information like favorite bus stops and other preferences that are set in the app.


How We Use Information

App Functionality:

  • Personal Information & Communications: We process the information you provide directly to deliver the Services you request such as information about campus services; transit schedules; real-time bus information; and remembering local preferences and settings. Personal Information such as your name, email address, affiliation with UC Davis, or student status is not necessary to provide our Services to you.

    • We also use this information to respond to any questions, concerns, or other messages you may send Us about the App.  

  • ∫When we have access to your Location Services Data, we use it to tailor our Services for you, such as providing x, y, and z. Location Services Data is not necessary to provide our Services to you. However, the App may not provide personalized Services without this information. 

Analytics:

  • Device Information: We use this information within third-party developed tools Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to monitor App performance, understand how users interact with the app, and improve functionality and stability. This information is used solely for analytics, troubleshooting, and improving the user experience. 


Storage and Security

App data is stored locally on your device whenever practical. Authentication tokens and locally stored app data are protected using available device and App security controls.

Data transmitted between the app and UC Davis or third-party service endpoints is encrypted in transit. Data stored by the app is encrypted at rest where supported by the device, operating system, or app design.

UC Davis uses reasonable safeguards consistent with University policy and industry standard security best practices to protect information and the App.


Sharing and Disclosure

UC Davis does not sell any information collected through this app. UC Davis may share information within the University in furtherance of the uses described above.

We may disclose your Personal Information when required to comply with applicable laws, regulations, or lawful requests from public authorities. We may also share information when necessary to protect our rights, property, or safety, or those of our employees, customers, or others; to enforce our agreements and policies; to prevent, detect, or investigate fraud or other illegal activity; or to respond to emergencies involving health or safety.

Data used in the app may be provided by UC Davis units or external service providers. Links or references to non-UC services do not imply UC Davis control over those services or their privacy practices.


Your Choices

You may control your personal information in the following ways: 

  • You may choose not to use Our Services 
  • You may choose not to download and install the App, or delete the installed App from your device 
  •  You may choose to configure your device’s location service settings to limit or restrict how you share location data with Us.  
  • You have a right to request access to or modification of your personal information. We may not be able to modify your personal information in all circumstances.  
  • You may communicate with Us about the above choices using the contact information under “Contact Us.” When you choose to contact Us, we may need additional information to respond. 

Changes to This Notice

We may update this notice as app features change, including if future features collect or use additional information. The updated notice will be posted in the app and/or on the app website.
