Cut to Sacramento fiber-optic cable disrupts network access at UC Davis

Several important UC Davis services were unavailable starting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, when a construction project in downtown Sacramento severed a fiber-optic cable that carries network traffic to and from the Sacramento data center used by UC Davis.

Computing accounts, Banner, UC Davis Canvas, Final Grade Submission, myucdavis, and Office 365 were among the services affected. UC Davis services were re-established about 2:30 p.m. after technical personnel were able to restore a redundant network access channel.

The outage affected much more than UC Davis. It also shut down internet service to an unknown number of California state offices, the Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday evening.

As is standard practice during service disruptions, Information and Educational Technology administrators immediately began working to diagnose the problem and coordinate restoration of services. Service updates posted to status.ucdavis.edu kept service users apprised of the progress. Administrators monitored systems until well after midnight and into this morning, and will continue to monitor the services for any signs of further trouble.

At UC Davis, Final Grade Submission was functioning more slowly than usual for some users Thursday morning, but that problem was not related to Wednesday’s outage. For updates, see status.ucdavis.edu.
