Campus email, other computing services will be unavailable starting Dec. 26

Email and other central campus computing services will be unavailable starting early Dec. 26 while the campus Data Center undergoes an important electrical upgrade.

The outage will begin at 7 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, and last up to 48 hours, although the project team expects to finish much sooner if no unforeseen problems occur.

In addition to email, other key services unavailable during the outage include wireless access, MyUCDavis, SmartSite, Banner, and departmental colocation servers and research computing hosted at the Data Center. Find a more complete list and a FAQ (frequently asked questions) on the project website available through status.ucdavis.edu.

A few services will remain available, including the wired network, the main UC Davis website (www.ucdavis.edu), CAS and Kerberos authentication, and DNS. Online giving and environmental equipment & alarms, not hosted at the Data Center, should be available too.

Email messages that would have been delivered during the shutdown will be delivered to the customer's account after the outage ends.

The project will increase electrical capacity to the Data Center, supporting much-needed campus server room space for research computing server clusters. The project group will also perform tasks that will improve service to Data Center clients and would otherwise require a separate service interruption.

The campus chose Dec. 26-27 to have the least possible impact on campus.

Read more in "All campus e-mail, other computer services to go down Dec. 26" (Friday Update, Dec. 3) or at the Campus Network and Service Status site. Please direct any questions to the IT Express Computing Services Help Desk at 530-754-HELP (4357).

One way to prepare is to read the FAQ before the outage; questions not answered there should be directed to IT Express. Questions of general interest might be added to the FAQ.

Community members who need assistance or have questions during the disruption may contact IT Express. Consultants will be available for outage-related inquiries from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 26-27. Updates during the outage will be posted at status.ucdavis.edu.

Information and Educational Technology and Facilities are carrying out this project in consultation with the Registrar's Office, the Chancellor's Cabinet, and the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors.
