Campus Looks for New Search Engine; Temporarily Adopts Google

Following problems reported with the campus? Alta Vista search engine, a small team was assembled to identify possible alternatives. After consultation with various groups, including the Technology Infrastructure Forum, the team is developing a Request for Proposals (RFP), with the goal of identifying vendors who can comply with requirements for a new campus search engine. In the meantime, on May 21st, the campus temporarily transitioned from Alta Vista to using Google's free search engine (see http://www.ucdavis.edu/search/). Instructions on how to use Google to index Web pages were provided to the technology support community (see http://ism.ucdavis.edu/googlesearch-howto.html). The results of the RFP will be communicated later this fall.
