Data Center upgrade went well, ended early

MyUCDavis, campus email, SmartSite, uConnect--all were working normally as winter quarter began. In other words, the Data Center electrical upgrade Dec. 26 ended successfully. It even finished early.

Information and Educational Technology teamed with Facilities Management to shut down the center early on Sunday, Dec. 26, to install the upgrade to the Data Center and make other improvements. The outage interrupted dozens of campus services that rely on the Data Center, and IET asked the campus to plan for a service interruption of up to 48 hours in case major, unforeseen problems emerged.

No unexpected problems occurred. The more than two dozen employees who came in to work that Sunday had the Data Center operating normally by 7 p.m. that evening.

A side benefit is the attention the project brought to @UCDavisStatus, the IET Twitter account that posts Data Center maintenance and service notices. The Data Center used the account to help inform the campus when the upgrade was finished.

@UCDavisStatus had 110 followers as of Jan. 5, up from 90 on Dec. 20 and 60 on Nov. 1. The account went live in September.
