Microsoft Releases XP/SP2

On August 6, 2004, Microsoft initiated the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Windows Service Pack 2 will implement several software updates and additional security controls.

According to Microsoft, on-line distribution will be the primary distribution vehicle for Windows XP Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 will be delivered as a Microsoft Windows XP critical update. Institutional users (staff and faculty) will be able to use other options that integrate with available campus unit software delivery systems. Important dates to note are:

8/10/2004: Release to Automatic Updates (for machines running pre-release versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2 only)

8/16/2004: Release to Automatic Updates (for machines NOT running pre-release versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2)

It is strongly advised that you check the compatibility of Windows applications (particularly non-Microsoft applications) you intend to use with this new Service Pack. One of the best places to seek this information is through the Web site of the vendor of the application. Additionally, information is available from Microsoft (see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx and http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/preinstall.mspx).
