UC Davis is actively evaluating the future of the SmartSite learning management system (LMS), and if you'd like to influence the decision, now's the time to examine the choices and send in your comments. You have several opportunities.
The campus is testing three options to power the next version of SmartSite: Canvas by Instructure, Brightspace by D2L (formerly Desire2Learn), and Sakai CLE 10, the latest release hosted by SmartSite's current vendor, AsahiNet International. UC Davis will choose one of the three in winter quarter, then install it by fall 2015.
This autumn the LMS project group is conducting pilots for all three options, plus holding weekly seminars on the various LMS tools (here's the agenda). The group invites any faculty member, student or employee who wants to learn more about the trial systems to attend. The seminars meet at noon each Tuesday in Academic Surge 2363.
You can also:
- Attend one of the weekly drop-in sessions with Information and Educational Technology's faculty trainers. To walk through the trial tools, just stop by, or schedule a time in advance.
- Send comments about your experience in any of the proposed LMS systems to this online form.
- Get details and updates at the project website.
"We want to be sure people are clear on the timelines for this project," said Constance Fuller, LMS project manager. "We are evaluating the options now, and feedback is important to us."
Tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff have used SmartSite over the years to teach, learn, share materials, and work on projects.
