Email and Email Forwarding Transition Breakdown

Due to increasing security risks and costs, The University of California, Davis is retiring its Email for Life and Email Forwarding for Life services for former students, staff, and other former affiliates.

Current and former faculty and UC Davis Health employees are not impacted by this change.

Below, is a breakdown of these changes, separated by demographic. Choose the one that best describes your relationship with UC Davis.

Undergraduate Student Email Transition

  • Departing Undergraduate Students
  • Students graduating or separating will have the option to convert their @ucdavis.edu email to a @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu email address or allow their account to close. Once transitioned, undergraduates will have access to a @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu email account for one year after graduation or separation. Accounts will have a 20GB storage limit.

  • Former Undergraduate Students
  • Former undergraduates who separated or graduated in Spring-Summer 2024 will have the option of transitioning their @ucdavis.edu email to a temporary @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu or allowing their account to close on February 18, 2025. In order to qualify for the temporary service, users must have their account storage at or below 20GB by the end of the day on February 4, 2025. Once transitioned to the @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu service, former undergraduate students will have access to the email accoutrements for one year (expires in February 2026).

    Accounts will have a 20GB storage limit.

    Former students who do not meet the storage requirement to qualify for the former students email service will be notified via email of when their account will close. Once their UC Davis email account closes, any messages sent to that account will bounce back and the sender will be notified that their message is not deliverable.

 

Graduate Student Email Transition 

  • Departing Graduate Students
  • Graduate students graduating or separating from the university will have the option to convert their @ucdavis.edu email to a @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu email address or allow their account to close. Once transitioned, former graduate students will have access to a @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu email account for two years after graduation or separation. Graduate students may ​opt-in for a third year. Accounts will have a 20GB storage limit.

  • Former Graduate Students
  • Former graduate who separated or graduated in Spring-Summer 2024 will have the option of transitioning their @ucdavis.edu email to a temporary @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu or allowing their account to close on February 18, 2025. In order to qualify for the temporary service, users must have their account storage at or below 20GB by the end of the day on February 4, 2025. Once transitioned to the @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu service, former graduate students will have access to the email accoutrements for two years, and may opt-in for a third year.

    Accounts will have a 20GB storage limit.

    Temporary Affiliate Form (TAF) process available for extensions. Exceptions apply.

    Former students who do not meet the requirements to qualify for the former students email service will be notified via email of when their account will close. Staff Email Transition

  • Departing Staff  
  • Email access no longer available after separating from UC Davis with a 30-day grace period as of June 1, 2024​. Email forwarding no longer available as of July 1, 2024.

  • Former Staff

  • Email accounts and email forwarding services for former staff who retired or separated from the university in the spring or summer of 2024 will be retired on January 17, 2025.

External Affiliate Email Transition

  • Departing External Affiliates
  • Email access no longer available after their last day at UC Davis​ (effective June 1, 2024).

  • Former External Affiliates

  • Email accounts and email forwarding services for former temporary affiliates whoseparated from the university in the spring or summer of 2024 will be retired on December 18, 2024.
