Campus EndNote license is ending; renewal or free alternatives available

If you use EndNote bibliographic software under the current UC Davis license, you have until Jan. 1, 2019, to obtain a new license or choose a different product. Free options are available.

Since 2006, several campus departments have teamed up to cover the cost of providing EndNote for any UC Davis faculty, student or staff member who wanted to download it. About 1,500 people downloaded the software last year.

Some of those departments now want to use a different product when the current agreement ends Aug. 31, 2018. As a result:

• Some departments are buying blocks of new EndNote licenses at $70 each, for use by their faculty, students or staff. Those licenses can be re-used. To learn if your department is among the ones renewing EndNote, talk to your tech support, or contact Ellen Carlson, interim Software Licensing coordinator, at ucdsoftware@ucdavis.edu.

• If you’re not covered by your department, you can buy an individual license for $70. It will include an upgrade from the current version 8 to version 9, plus maintenance.

• The current campus license expires Aug. 31, but the vendor will allow current customers at UC Davis to use EndNote under the existing agreement through the end of 2018.
