Major Technology Platforms at UC Davis to Reflect Lived Names This Summer & Fall

Google, Microsoft 365, and UC Davis Canvas already display lived names. More services to be added in the 2023-2024 academic year.

To promote digital inclusion and belonging, campus technology services have started displaying lived names for students, faculty, staff, and other affiliates. A lived name reflects a person’s true identity and may differ from their legal name.

The effort to ensure one’s lived identity matches their online campus presence is ongoing. Information and Educational Technology (IET) teams are working to update major technology platforms at UC Davis and to comply with the University of California Gender Recognition & Lived Name (GRLN) policy

An ongoing effort, progress to date

The technology ecosystem at UC Davis is broad and lived names will gradually appear in different digital spaces over time. The following systems currently reflect lived names, with more services to be added in the future. Click here for the latest information

Check & update your lived name

Notes:

  • Updates will appear in  24-72 hours (about 3 days) for IET services. If it has been longer than 72 hours, please verify the updates in the online campus directory or UCPath as appropriate. Log out and back into systems to also assist in updating the new data.  If this persists, please contact IT Express. The timeline of changes may vary across campus services.

  • Some platforms may not reflect lived names immediately after you make a change. For example, the Microsoft Teams client may cache some data, like display names, for up to 28 days. This can delay the visibility of your updates.

  • Some characters, especially diacritics, may not display as intended.

  • Your login information for technology services will not change  after you update your lived name. Learn more

Why lived names?

UC Davis’s Gender Recognition and Lived Name (GRLN) initiative was created to address systemic inequities faced by our trans and non-binary community on campus and to implement the UC Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy.

This initiative reaffirms the university’s commitment to digital inclusion and belonging, and advances UC Davis’s strategic goal to ensure that technology platforms reflect the diverse identities of our community.
