Zoom Phone: Improving Collaboration and Communication
College of Engineering Use Case
In the coming months, Zoom Phone, a new service offering from Aggie Phone, will be available at UC Davis. Zoom Phone provides superior user experience, the flexibility needed in the post-pandemic workplace, and responds to the diverse communication and collaboration needs of our community.
Some IT employees on campus have already moved to Zoom Phone to test out the tech before deploying it to their departments and units. One of the early adopters is Steve Pigg, IT director for the College of Engineering. In the following use case, Steve shares his Zoom Phone experience and explains why it was love at first ring.
Zoom Phone Use Case: College of Engineering
How long have you had Zoom Phone?
I have had Zoom Phone since November. I was part of the Information and Educational Technology (IET) Zoom Phone pilot program.

Are you the only one in your department with Zoom Phone?
As of this interview (conducted in April 2024), there are six of us on Zoom Phone and I am eager to migrate more staff in my department.
What do you like about using Zoom Phone?
I’ve had my campus phone number for ten years and I get a lot of sales calls. Zoom Phone helps me better screen my calls and allows me to continue focusing on my work. For instance, you can easily send a call to voicemail and then get an almost instant transcription of the audio message. I’m able to share the transcription and audio file with others across various platforms, all while never leaving a Zoom video meeting.
What was it like transitioning from Cisco to Zoom Phone?
The Zoom Phone app is nearly flawless. The transition was so easy. The nature of remote and hybrid working environments is that most of our connections are now made in Zoom. Having this phone call integration in an app I already use all the time is extremely helpful.
Why would you recommend Zoom Phone to others?
I think Zoom Phone streamlines my work life. It’s one less app that I have to maintain, and it works exactly as expected. I love it.
Zoom Phone Project
The UC Davis Aggie Phone Migration Team is currently working with departments across campus to develop a schedule for moving to Zoom Phone. While there has been a lot of interest in making the switch, not everyone will be able to move to Zoom. To respond to specific needs, some members of the campus community will continue to use the Cisco platform.
