The UC Davis IET AI Speaker Series continues Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at noon with Reflections on the Utility of GenAI in Research, Teaching, and Service. Join Mairaj Syed, associate professor of religious studies and Middle East/South Asia studies, in an exploration of GenAI’s application in research, data analysis, translation, teaching, and more.

Speaker bio

Mairaj U. Syed is an associate professor of religious studies and the Middle East/South Asia studies at the University of California, Davis, where he also serves as the director of the Middle East/South Asia studies program. He has published extensively on Islamic law, theology, ethics, and hadith literature. His current research uses computational methods to analyze hadith literature and has received numerous awards for his work. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Religion from Princeton University. 

Full event description 

Professor Syed will share his insights on generative AI’s application in research for drafting papers, conducting data analysis, and translation, in teaching for enhancing PowerPoint presentations, and in service for streamlining administrative tasks like drafting communications and organizing meetings. Looking forward, he will also discuss the potential of API calls for tasks such as corpus translation and personalized writing assistance.
