Introducing Rocky, the UC Davis AI chat and campus guide

Rocky is your free, personal, and interactive guide to help you navigate all the ins and outs of UC Davis. Whether you are a newcomer or a seasoned member of our community, this savvy and friendly chat is here to ensure you are always informed!

Starting in January 2025, Rocky is available in Beta to all UC Davis staff (including contractors and student employees). Click the icons below to log in or provide feedback.

UC Davis Proud

Rocky is designed specifically for the UC Davis community by UC Davis.
Developed as a collaboration between the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Information and Educational Technology (IET), Rocky knows UC Davis better than any other AI chats. Rocky uses the most recently published university information and is specifically designed to answer questions about academics, university events, campus life, and more.

Rocky is rigorous and cites sources.
Just like in a book or a research paper, you can always check the campus web resources that Rocky uses to formulate its answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I use Rocky?
  • You will need a UC Davis computing account and be part of the beta pilot to access the platform. Don't worry, we are expanding access to Rocky every month! Go to https://chat.ucdavis.edu/. On the resulting window, click UC Login. On the next screen, log into your UC Davis computing account. You will be redirected to the chat window. Use the chat throughout your day.
  • How is Rocky different from ChatGPT?
  • Rocky runs on a large language model (LLM) derived from OpenAI (the makers of ChatGPT) but was especially trained on data sources specific to UC Davis. Moreover, it is continuously updated with new information, providing you with the latest updates from UC Davis.
  • How is Rocky different from other chat tools?
  • Rocky is a generative AI chat bot. It is not designed to replace other chat tools, which may have provide access to live support and other features.
  • Is it ok to put my personal information into Rocky?
  • Rocky is not yet connected to personalized results and providing personal information won’t help it give better answers at this time. While it’s OK to provide Rocky with information you’d normally share with a classmate or general administrator at the University, putting anything more sensitive than that isn’t covered by the Terms and Conditions.
  • What kind of information is not allowed on Rocky?
  • Information that can be classified as P4 is not allowed in Rocky. Other information that is not allowed includes social security numbers, health information, and other highly sensitive personal information. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions for additional details, as well as the data protection levels (P1-P4) as outlined in IS-3.
  • Does Rocky hallucinate or provide inaccurate answers?
  • As with all generative AI and large language models, Rocky could get things wrong. It’s been trained on University information and as a result, tends to be more right than other sources, but you cannot expect it to be always accurate. Rocky does provide you with links and sources to verify its information. Please double check any important information.
  • How do I log out of Rocky?
  • Since Rocky uses single sign-on to authenticate, you’ll have to log out of your computing account. A logout button is on our roadmap, but we’re still in beta!
