Installation of Internet Explorer 7 Not Recommended at this Time
Microsoft recently released a new version of their Web browser software, Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). Like many other universities, UC Davis is strongly recommending IE7 not be installed on campus computers at this time.
Information and Educational Technology staff will perform extensive testing on IE7 to ensure it is compatible with all UC Davis applications, such as online grading, SmartSite, MyUCDavis, and others. Vendors such as Oracle and SunGard Higher Education (Banner's vendor), have also not certified IE7 for use with their products. Information about when to install Internet Explorer 7 will be sent to the campus at a later date.
Internet Explorer 6 Remains Compliant
In late October, Microsoft released IE7 as a non-security "high priority" update rather than as a "critical security" update. While IE7 provides a more secure environment and greater functionality over IE6, this update was NOT made available as a correction to any published security vulnerability in IE6. Thus, the installation and use of IE7 is not mandated by campus policy at this time. When Microsoft ceases to provide maintenance support for IE6, the continued use of IE6 will be inconsistent with campus policy.
Blocking Internet Explorer 7
Microsoft is distributing Internet Explorer 7 as a high-priority update via Automatic Updates for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft is now providing a blocker utility to prevent computers from automatically receiving Internet Explorer 7 as an update. The toolkit can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site.
