IET: Wait on Vista, check brand-new Web site for updates

Vista is here. To help faculty, students and staff figure out what the arrival of Microsoft's new operating system means for campus computers and systems, Information and Educational Technology has created a Web site with recommendations and useful information.

Go to the site to learn about or find:
  • application compatibility for Microsoft Vista, Office 2007 software, and the Internet Explorer 7 browser.
  • helpful links and resources.
  • details about how departments, staff, faculty, and students can obtain and activate copies of Vista and Office 2007.
  • hardware requirements for compatibility with Vista, Office 2007, and IE7.
  • campus Microsoft software licensing agreements.
  • Vista security features.
  • compatibility testing methods.
  • compatibility testing results.

IET, in collaboration with several other campus units, continues to examine the impact of Vista on other applications commonly used on campus. At this time, like many other universities, UC Davis does not recommend an immediate upgrade to the new Vista operating system. Early adopters could experience some application compatibility and hardware support issues.

If you are considering upgrading to Vista, proceed with caution. Before ordering or installing Vista on campus computers, make sure your computer meets the recommended system requirements and be aware of the status of our investigations so that you can make educated decisions about whether to upgrade. If you are considering purchasing a new Windows computer, we recommend you purchase a "Vista Premium Ready" machine.

Staff and faculty are encouraged to consult with their departmental IT staff and to review the information po sted on the UC Davis Vista Web site.

Windows XP remains supported by Microsoft and IET, and an immediate migration to Vista is not required to comply with the UC Davis cyber-safety standards. If you have questions, please contact the IT Express Help Desk at (530) 754-HELP (754-4357).
