Latest teaching workshops range from SmartSite to Facebook

Several short classes on SmartSite have been scheduled this spring--a timely lineup, considering that the online course-management system officially rolls out to the entire campus in less than half a year.

The list of subjects ranges from a general introduction to SmartSite, to how to use it to organize a dissertation. Some workshops are available at either beginning or advanced levels. Other classes venture outside SmartSite, including teaching with PowerPoint, using Really Simple Syndication, and learning about podcasting, blogging, Google tools, Facebook, and social bookmarking.

The classes are sponsored by IET-Mediaworks. Register here.

SmartSite, based on open-source Sakai software, has operated as a pilot program at UC Davis for a year. It will eventually replace the course-management tools offered through MyUCDavis; the SmartSite pilot phase ends with the start of the fall 2007 quarter.

Use of the system has more than doubled each of the three latest quarters, surpassing 6,000 unique users as of the winter term.
