New campus IT architect is hired, will start Aug. 4

David Walker, director of advanced technology in the UC Office of the President, has been hired as campus information technology architect at UC Davis. He will report to Pete Siegel, chief information officer and vice provost for Information and Educational Technology, and start his new job Aug. 4.

Walker will work with others on campus to analyze, design and deploy the UC Davis computing infrastructure architecture so that it meets campus technical and business needs while helping the campus move forward in research, teaching, and public service. The job requires leadership, and continues to be important to the campus despite the tight budget.

Walker is a leader both in the University of California and nationwide in IT trends and architectures, said Siegel's letter of June 25 announcing the hire. Walker's previous jobs include director of technologies for the California Digital Library, and director of telecommunications at UC San Diego. He managed the creation of UC Irvine's campus network.

"[Walker's] experience and knowledge will be tremendous assets for us as we continue to move forward as a campus with our information technology investments," Siegel said, "especially so in challenging budgetary times."

Walker gave a talk on "the role of an IT architect in higher education" May 22 in Kemper Hall (an audio podcast and PowerPoint of his talk are available). He can be contacted at dhwalker@ucdavis.edu.
