Email, other campus computer services will be interrupted Sunday, Dec. 21

Dozens of UC Davis computer services and Web sites will be unavailable on Sunday, Dec. 21, from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. while technicians upgrade electrical and network systems at the Data Center. Services as varied as email, SmartSite, MyUCDavis and Mondavi Center ticketing will be temporarily suspended, but the main campus Web site, www.ucdavis.edu, should remain up.

The Data Center scheduled the work during a quiet time of year. The fall quarter ends Dec. 12, and winter quarter instruction won't start until Jan. 5, 2009.

Servers in the Data Center host applications and store data for various campus operations. During the eight-hour outage, online connections between the center's machines and the rest of the campus will be suspended--meaning that all services provided by or hosted in the Data Center (except www.ucdavis.edu) will be unavailable.

The outages will be visible throughout campus. Any departmental or local service that uses Kerberos authentication, for example, will not be accessible. Nor will people be able to access MyUCDavis, the course tools in MyUCDavis, SmartSite, or the campus Library's VPN. Email (including DavisMail for students) will not be accessible, but no messages will be lost.
