Due to increasing security risks and costs, The University of California, Davis is retiring its Email for Life and Email Forwarding for Life services for former students, staff, and other former affiliates. Learn more about this transition.

Active students, faculty, staff, former and retired faculty, and UC Davis Health are not impacted by this change.

When will my DavisMail (@ucdavis.edu) email end?

Information and Educational Technology (IET) is taking a phased approach to retiring email and email forwarding accounts for former students, staff, and other former affiliates. This change does not impact faculty (current or former), current students or staff, or UC Davis Health employees.

Aggies in the impacted groups will be notified via email of when their accounts will close.

How do I reset my UC Davis email passphrase?

Please note, former students will need their UC Davis Student ID number to reset their passphrase. If you have forgotten your Student ID number, please contact the Office of the Registrar

If you are a former staff member, visiting scholar, or post-doctoral researcher, please contact your department’s Human Resources office or UC Path.

Can I pay to keep my UC Davis email account?

No, you cannot pay to keep your @ucdavis.edu account. If you are an alum, you can become a member of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association. A paid life membership comes with an @alumni.ucdavis.edu email account. 

What is a @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu email account?

Departing Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Upon separating or graduating UC Davis, undergraduates and graduate students will have their @ucdavis.edu email account transferred to a @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu account. Accounts will be active for 1-3 years, depending on the student's affiliation with the university (i.e. undergraduate or graduate).

Former Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Former undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for a @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu account if they enroll in Duo and, if applicable, adjust storage to below 20GB, by March 15, 2024. The @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu accounts will start April 15, 2024 and be available for 1-3 years, depending on the student's affiliation with the university (i.e. undergraduate or graduate).

@formerstudents.ucdavis.edu account features

  • Receive emails at your original @ucdavis.edu email address. Messages will be automatically sent to your new email account. Replies will feature from your new @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu email address. Your name identifier or mail ID before the @ remains the same and cannot be changed.
  • Account includes Google Workspace with a 20GB storage limit. The ability to create new shared drives is not supported.  
  • UC Davis identity is protected with Duo multifactor authentication.  
  • Email forwarding is not available.

Will my messages transfer to my @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu account?

Yes, @ucdavis.edu emails and storage data will transfer to @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu account when students graduate or separate from UC Davis.

How can I let people know my email is closing or transitioning?

Whether your UC Davis email account is closing or you are a former student and it is temporarily transitioning to an @formerstudents.ucdavis.edu account, you will want to let your email contacts know a change is coming. Can I keep my DavisMail account if I've graduated but have pending work for my department?

If you have ongoing UC Davis-related work after graduation, such as research or patents, please contact your department. They can sponsor you through a Temporary Affiliate Form (TAF) to retain your email and computing account if you need it beyond the initial grace period after graduation or the original account closure deadline

Can I keep or obtain a DavisMail account if I am a university volunteer?

To access a DavisMail account, volunteers must be sponsored by their department through a Temporary Affiliate Form (TAF). This process must be repeated annually to retain access to email and computing accounts.

What if I received an email notice, but I'm still a student/staff/faculty member?

I am a UC Davis Health employee. Where can I go for more information?

UC Davis Health employees can contact the IT Help Desk - Technology Operations Center. 

I have Microsoft 365 email. How will these changes impact me?

Former students, staff, or visiting scholars using Microsoft 365 cannot retain their UC Davis email after they leave the university. Email forwarding or switching to a perpetual Google account is no longer possible. If your department determines you are needed for ongoing work, they can sponsor an email and computing account on your behalf through a Temporary Affiliate Form (TAF).
